About the destination

Lake Titicaca is located on the border between Peru and Bolivia. Both countries share the waters of this lake. The western side of Titicaca is located in the Puno Region, in Peru. On the other hand, the eastern side is located in La Paz Department, in Bolivia.

In total, 20 rivers empty their waters into the Titicaca Lake. The most important of them are the Huancane, Ramis and Illave rivers.

Lake Titicaca has a maximun depth of 281 meters (around 922 feet).

The first step of the journey is arriving at the city of Puno. The flight between Lima and Juliaca takes around 40 minutes, while the bus trip between Juliaca and Puno takes around 50 minutes. Once in Puno it’s pretty easy to get to Lake Titicaca, given that the lake is located just next to the city.

Currently, none species of shark has been identified living in the waters of Lake Titicaca. However, in the year 2017 a group of students of the State University of Puno discovered the fosilized remains of a shark near Lake Titicaca. It’s believed that this extinct species of shark inhabited Lake Titicaca 400 millions of years ago. The fossil was named as “Pucapampella Shark”.

Lake Titicaca is home to unique animal species adapted to the dry and cold climate of the region. The most oustanding bird species are the pato colorado, the pato puna, the pato sutro, the guallata, and the colorful parihuana. According to Peruvian tradition, the Parihuana inspired the white and red colors of the national flag of Peru. Regarding fishes, the most known species that inhabit Lake Titicaca are the suche and the trucha. The last one is the main ingredient for numerous local dishes.

Lake Ticaca is located on the southeastern part of every map of Peru. It most maps, it can be easily spotted as a blue oval-like shape on the border between Peru and Bolivia.

Preparation

Wear whatever is comfortable. It is recommended to have a sturdy pair of broken-in trail shoes, boots, or sneakers. It is preferable to dress in layers and wear clothing that will wick away perspiration and keep you dry and comfortable

Not much, remember our trips are all inclusive. We do suggest you bring appropriate clothing to fit the season and a day pack to carry extra snacks and water.
